This Andrei Tarkovsky's masterpiece is visually spellbounding full of hidden meanings and metaphors tells the story of a Russian poet Andrei Gortchakov(Oleg Yankovsky), accompanied by guide and translator Eugenia(Domiziana Giordano), is traveling through Italy researching the life of an 18th century Russian composer. He meets the lunatic Domenico, who years earlier had imprisoned his own family in a barn to save them from the evils of the world and develops kind of friendship while Eugenia tries to seduce him. He is haunted by home sickness amidst of all this. It is typical Tarkovsky style movie. It is leisurely paced, highly poetic with lot of symbolism. Photography is brilliant, music, editing, costumes are good. The film demands a very high level of patience and involvement from viewers.
